Dear Friends & Supporters,
We extend our deepest gratitude for your steadfast support of The Alliance Cultural Foundation International (ACFI), the international partner of The Alliance Cultural Foundation (ACF) in Taiwan. Your unwavering commitment has been instrumental in helping to build a sustainable future for Hualien and Taitung (Huatung). Thanks to your support, ACF has been able to envision and implement ambitious initiatives, fostering meaningful changes in this region.
Reflecting on the past 15 years, we are proud of the collective achievements of ACF, Junyi School of Innovation, and the Paul Chiang Arts and Cultural Foundation. Through regional revitalization, innovative education, and the establishment of the Paul Chiang Art Center, we have worked tirelessly to integrate resources and infuse new vitality into Huatung. These efforts have brought greater awareness to the unique heritage and culture of the region.
In recent years, the rapid advancement of technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), has introduced both challenges and opportunities. Since 2011, I have been deeply concerned about the implications of technological development on humanity, a topic I explored in my book “Education Should Be Different.” In this era, I firmly believe education must evolve. We must not only focus on leveraging technology as a tool, we must focus even more on the basic tenet of education – developing the whole person.
Junyi School of Innovation has steadily gained recognition for its educational approach, which focuses on nurturing the core value of “being a good person.” By helping students discover their unique learning paths and unlocking their potential, Junyi provides diverse experiences such as dormitory life, mountain and sea explorations, and self-directed learning. These experiences enrich students' literacy in humanities and build their critical thinking skills, allowing them to develop sound judgment and self-discipline. With nearly 1,000 graduates over 13 years, Junyi’s achievements affirm this education model is an effective path forward.
We have also devoted much attention to the development of local vocational schools. Last year, our vocational training and teaching support program at National Cheng Kung Commercial & Aquaculture Senior Vocational High School addressed the pressing issue of teacher shortages in rural areas. By partnering with professional chefs from the Shin Yeh Restaurant Group, we not only enhanced students' practical skills but also transformed classroom instructions through professional development for teachers. This innovative approach reignited students' passion for learning and aligned their training with industry needs.
In parallel, we continue to support local youth in returning to their hometowns for employment and entrepreneurship. Initiatives like the Hualien-Taitung Cultural Sustainability Co-Learning Group, BINBIN Ecotourism Alliance, and Island Life Co-Learning Group provide platforms for mutual support and collaboration. These efforts promote communication, cooperation, and sustainable development in Huatung, fostering a lifestyle that celebrates living in a meaningful way without compromising economic growth.
We are especially grateful to ACFI for supporting the Junyi Innovative Study Abroad Program (JISAP). This program has empowered Junyi graduates to pursue international studies, enhanced their English proficiency, and expanded their global perspectives. In November, many ACFI supporters and friends visited Taitung to witness firsthand the transformative impact of Junyi and our regional efforts.
Looking ahead, the Paul Chiang Art Center is set to open in March next year, and we warmly invite you to visit in April. This art center, inspired by the artistic vision of Paul Chiang, aims to elevate Huatung to the international stage while advancing regional revitalization and talent development.
As we celebrate ACF’s 15th anniversary, we are profoundly grateful for your partnership in helping us dream and achieve. Together, we are building a brighter future for Huatung, nurturing exceptional talent, and making a lasting impact on Taiwan’s cultural and educational landscape.
Wishing you and your loved ones peace, health, and joy.
Sincerely,
The Chair & Board Members of ACFI
